Janet Allen really desired to be on the stage. With that ability she hid herself from the pupils in her charge who would have appreciated a head that was more human.

Miss Allen interviewed me as a pupil in February 1979 in her sitting room. I remember her kindness as I was very nervous.

Janet was the Headmistress when I was interviewed, as a very young teacher straight out of university, for the role of Assistant History teacher at Benenden. I was so glad when she appointed me and I was able to begin my first Benenden adventure. She was in her last term when I arrived so I hardly got to know her at all. Much to my surprise, I encountered Janet again some years later when I was being interviewed for my first Headship and Janet was on the Governing Body. I remember how kind she was to my young children, buying them Hairy McClary books which they loved - and so did she. I'm not sure Janet let many people see how warm, caring and funny she was but I feel privileged that I saw it and was able to appreciate her kindness.

I joined the staff for Betty Clarke’s last year so only just long enough to glimpse the challenge that Janet Allen was taking on as only the third Head in more than fifty years. Her warm personality and persistent cheerfulness were much needed in what must have felt a very lonely world. The contrast between facilities and life at Benenden then and now both for girls and for teachers needs to be remembered to be believed and Miss Allen took on the challenge of making really major changes with determination and energy, at considerable cost to herself. I hope others remember her roles in plays; I’m sure many value her for personal support and encouragement, as I do.

Janet Allen interviewed me in 1984 and offered me the post of French conversation teacher which I enjoyed enormously until 1991.

I can only agree with Sarah Latham. We watched the fabulous drama production in the hall. There was one character who stood out.Who on earth was the actress?? Right at the end the character was unmasked; it was Miss Allen. Just brilliant!!!!

Janet Allen was the first of three Headmistresses with whom I was in close contact at Benenden, as a parent and as a governor and I remember her with affection and with gratitude for the part she played in the life of the School.
